A letter to someone you care about
You care about them.
Where do the words
begin?
Sometimes you know how you feel, but the words will not come. Your letter does not need to be long or beautifully written. Start with something true, and one small thing you want them to know.
Try starting with these three things
Remember one thing you want to thank them for
Did they listen, help you, or make an ordinary day a little easier? A real detail makes the letter feel like it could only come from you.
Use the words you would say out loud
If you usually say “I miss you,” you can write that. You do not need to sound formal, poetic, or different from yourself.
Offer care without asking them to feel better
You might write “If you want to talk, I am here.” If you can offer something specific, say what you can genuinely do: “Would you like to have lunch together on Saturday?”
Read it out loud once. If it sounds like you talking to them, it does not need to be made prettier.
Five letters
you can make your own
These are original examples from the DEAR ME team. Change the names, relationship and details to fit your own story. One sentence may be all you need.
For a friend having a hard week
A gentle way to say: I am here
Dear you, You have had a lot to carry lately. I may not be able to help with everything, but if you want to talk—or just have some company—I am here. I wanted to send you a little gift and a reminder that there is room for a quiet moment, too. Thinking of you
For someone who looks after you
Thank them for a kindness you remember
Dear you, Thank you for asking how I am, and for listening even when I tell the same story again. I do not always say it, but your care stays with me. This little box is a thank-you from me. I hope you have some time just for yourself, too. With love
For your partner, on an ordinary day
You do not have to wait for an anniversary
Dear you, There is no special occasion today. I just wanted to say that I am glad you are in my everyday life. Thank you for the small things we share, and for being beside me on the difficult days. I saw this and thought of you. So here it is, with a little love from me. Love you
For someone in your family
Write the way you talk to each other
Dear Mum, I have not called as often as I would like lately, but I have been thinking of you. Thank you for always checking in and caring about me. I am sending you a little gift. I hope you find a quiet moment for yourself. Let us talk again soon. Missing you, with love
For yourself
What would you like to hear today?
Dear me, Some things got done today, and some things did not. Thank you for keeping going, even on the days that felt harder than you told anyone. Tonight, I am making a little room to rest. The things still waiting can have their turn tomorrow. From me, learning to be a little kinder to myself
They do not have to reply
for your care to reach them.
If you mean it, you can end with “No need to reply right away. I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you.” A letter does not have to become another task for them.
You do not need to promise that everything will be fine. Share what you can honestly offer. Leave out details they would prefer to keep private, especially when another person will help read or print the letter.
